About
Aia Contemporary is an independent art space based in Prague, dedicated to presenting contemporary work by international artists whose practices are shaped, in some way, by tattooing. This curatorial focus gives Aia a distinct position within the art world, offering a platform for artists who move between tattooing and contemporary visual art in original, often unexpected ways. Whether through personal experience, visual language, or creative influence, this connection forms a quiet but deliberate thread across the program.
The gallery’s exhibitions include painting, sculpture, installation, and works on paper, and are shaped by process, material exploration, and a commitment to individual artistic voice.
The gallery is led by Rory Schmitz, a curator and creative director with over a decade of experience in contemporary art. He previously co-founded Skalitzers Contemporary Art in Berlin, a gallery known for bringing tagging and street-influenced work into the exhibition space. There, he worked with artists including Carlos Mare, POET, ROA, Vhils, Danny Gretscher, COPE2, NUG, and VAO crew, curating shows in both Europe and Australia. At Aia, his focus continues to be on artists with a strong visual identity and a distinct, personal approach to their work.
Lee Stewart is a visual artist and tattooer whose studio is housed within Aia Contemporary. Known for her abstract, brushstroke-based work, Lee moves fluidly between tattooing, painting, and installation. Her work is driven by gesture, emotion, and immediacy, and has been exhibited internationally. Through both her tattoo practice and studio-based work, she brings a deeply personal and intuitive energy to the space.
Aia works closely with collectors, curators, and institutions to support the placement and visibility of the artists it presents. For inquiries about available works, exhibitions, or representation, please reach out to the gallery.
